Creating an Atmosphere of Calm

In the 21st century, stress is an unavoidable part of our lives. Our brain is built to react only to very short bursts of stress, and research indicates that long-term stress actually damages cognition, memory and even the immune system. The academic teams of Helen Doron take this research seriously, believing that creating a stress-free learning environment is essential to the children’s future prospects. Our successful formula is based on background hearing, positive reinforcement, small groups, spiral learning and multisensory activities.

The Helen Doron classroom provides an ideal setting for a happy, creative, socially and emotionally well-developed child. Classrooms are bright, well-lit spaces that are welcoming to the students. Most of our lessons take place while sitting on cushions in a circle where all our students are made to feel equally involved. The teaching of English or Spanish, and also the teaching of math, is done in groups of up to 10 children.

An effectively designed classroom can positively influence all areas of children’s development: physical, social-emotional and cognitive. Language and learning are nurtured in an environment that values and plans appropriate opportunities. An esthetically pleasing space can develop a child’s appreciation for the beautiful world around him. Most importantly, a quality environment can provide a home-like setting that feels ‘just right’ and enables our students to reach their fullest potential. Creating a non-threatening, comfortable and pleasant environment is essential for keeping the child inspired and successful.

  • In the 21st century, we can say with some certainty that stress is an unavoidable part of our lives. Our brain is built to react only to very short bursts of stress, and research indicates that long-term stress actually damages cognition, memory and even the immune system. The academic teams of Helen Doron take this research seriously, believing that creating a stress-free learning environment is essential to the children’s future prospects. There are quite a few indicators that you can find within our philosophy and methodology that support this notion.

In order to create and maintain this stress-free environment, we have found that …
    • * introducing a daily and weekly schedule reduces uncertainty.
    • * when teachers and staff are responsive and calm, students are less nervous.
    • *  a learning environment with a positive, pleasant atmosphere produces happy students.
    • * having free play time as part of the daily routine, expands the children’s creativity, sense of freedom and joy.
    • * positive reinforcement, constantly reminding the children that they are loved and worthy, goes a long, long way to a successful learning experience.

Helen Doron Kindergarten offers a joyful educational experience in which children are encouraged to explore their full range of abilities and potential.
